My Review: This is such a cozy, easy read mystery. It is unique, at least to me, in the fact that it is told exclusively from the hero's point of view. I've read very few books that are from only the male's point of view. The simplicity in which this book is written gives the book a down to earth feel. I loved the small town feel of Hidden Springs.

As for the characters, they are highly entertaining. They are everything I picture small town folks to be. Each person plays a role in solving the deadly game that has been foisted upon Deputy Sheriff Michael Keane, and sometimes it's quite humorous. Throughout most of the story, we see Michael struggling to let go of his worries so God can work in and around his life. Every Christian can relate to that same struggle (or at least I can)!

Overall, I really enjoyed this sleepy town novel, full of fun, loving people with good intentions and a deadly plot that will keep you guessing until the very end. (Note: this is the second book in the Hidden Springs Mystery series, but it can be read stand alone.)

My Review: Janice Thompson's latest book, Every Bride Has Her Day, is the perfect ending to the Brides with Style Series. It's been an absolute blast following Katie and Brady on their journey. I've enjoyed visiting Cosmopolitan Bride in Dallas and Katie's hometown of Fairfield. Each place reminds me of my hometown and the feelings of love and family that come with it. I'm kinda sad that the journey is over.

As I was reading this story, Katie really reminded me of myself. Her "eager to please everyone" attitude is so much like my own.  I love how Brady kept reminding her that their wedding day was really all about what they wanted, not what everyone else wanted. His attitude is the perfect compliment to hers. The love they have for each other shines through the pages. It's breathtaking!

The message of the story is clearly defined in Philippians 4:12: I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry whether living in plenty or in want. Each person in this story is learning a lesson about seasons and what it's like to have it all and then what it's like to feel at your lowest. It's a beautiful lesson that we all need to learn from.

Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better conclusion to the Brides with Style series and I can't wait to see what fantastic stories Janice cooks up next!

The Imposter, The Bishop's Family (Book 1)

My Review: I was so excited to get this book! I loved the first book in the Bishop Family series, The Imposter, so I jumped at the chance to review The Quieting. I was not disappointed. I was so excited to return to Stoney Ridge and the Stoltzfus family.

Their family dynamic is very interesting for an Amish family, and became even more interesting with the addition of David's nieces and mother. I loved picking up with David where we left off. He is a prime example of a man and a pastor who makes mistakes and learns and grows from them. He embraces the challenges God gives him, and handles them with as much grace and mercy as God gives him. His treatment of Birdy in this story tore at my heart, but of course, the end result is what matters! Abigail was an interesting character. Her outlook on life was clearly black and white. I loved watching her change and grow throughout the story with the help of Dane. Catching up with Katrina, Ruthie, Jesse and all of the other Stoney Ridge characters was an added bonus!

As with The Imposter, there are many lessons to be learned from this story. The main points, I think, are learning to let go of the past and taking the time to listen, REALLY listen for God's guidance. Abigail's work on genealogy is important, but it kept her focus on the past. Dane, through God's guidance, helped her see what was right in front of her! David and the little church of Stoney Ridge were facing what seemed to be an insurmountable problem. He had to learn to listen for God's prompting as to how to handle the situation.

Overall, I loved this book. It's an excellent addition to the Bishop Family series and I can't wait to read The Devoted, book three (coming Fall 2016!!).

My Reviews: At Bluebonnet Lake | Firefly Valley

My Review: I love Amanda Cabot's writing style. Her stories flow so steady and smooth. On Lone Star Trail was definitely a nice break from the fast paced, action packed stories I've been reading. I also enjoyed being back at Rainbow's End and Dupree. Catching up with characters from Firefly Valley and At Bluebonnet Lake made me even more happy to read this book.

Gillian and TJ are both fighting their own personal grief battles. I can relate to grief, feelings of guilt, and questioning "why did this happen to me." Amanda Cabot captures those emotions excellently. I love how these characters clicked as friends, but wouldn't allow themselves to surrender to more than that for a while. It was also entertaining that everyone around them (Kate, Greg, Marisa, Sally, the Matchers) recognized their feelings for each other before they did. Sometimes love truly is blind!

Amanda Cabot writes an emotionally challenging story with a clear message: Let go and let God (LGLG). It was so hard for these characters to embrace the concept and I appreciate that. It's not easy to do in real life and it made the story more relevant that the characters struggled to find their paths and finally surrendered their all to God.

Overall, this was an excellent end to the Texas Crossroads trilogy and I look forward to reading more by this fantastic author.

My Review: Wow! What a book! I don't know why it took me so long to pick it up and read it. With a refreshing view of the Amish life, and specifically of an Amish's minister's family, this book is filled with depth and feeling. Suzanne Woods Fisher is a masterful storyteller, and The Imposter is a superb example of that.

To me, it seemed the side story of David (Katrina's dad) was more prominent than Katrina's, but that's ok. I still got the connection I craved with Katrina. A woman scorned always makes for an interesting story. Reading the story was like being in Katrina's mind. I could feel Katrina's angst and struggle, her fear and joy. David Stolzfus is a strong example of a Christian man. His life is not perfect, his family is not perfect, but he handles what life throws at him with a heaping of grace and God's love. The side characters, Thelma, Andy, Jesse, and especially Birdy added a depth to the story and perfect little nuggets of God's mercy and love.

Suzanne has a masterful way of weaving in a message that not only touches the characters at just the right time, but also digs itself into the heart of the reader (at least is seems that way to me). The Imposter delivers a strong message of redemption and what it means to be in the midst of a storm. As David is fond of saying, "everybody begins somewhere." I believe the little Amish community of Stoney Ridge is getting ready to find out just how true that is.

My Review: This is the first book I've read in a long time. I was in a little bit of a reading slump, and then I had a lot going on in my personal life. I just didn't have time to read. I think this book is going to be the gateway for me to get back into reading. I really enjoyed the story. It's written like the pages of a diary from Eliza's point of view. At times, I was a little confused as to what was going on, but I think it's because the first half of the story was read in little bits and pieces at a time by me. To fully enjoy the beauty of this narrative, I think I would have had to read bigger chunks at a time.

The descriptions of the trials, tribulations, and memories Eliza has to deal with and the land, homes, and settings were phenomenal. I could empathize greatly with the women in this story. I really didn't care for the men. I thought Eliza could have done better in her choice of husband, but he gained my respect by the end. The story mainly focuses on Eliza and her growth as a Christ follower. I really enjoyed following her journey from the trials she faced at a young age to womanhood. It was inspiring!

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Jane Kirkpatrick weaves a story of overcoming past trials to face present times in an amazing way, with God at the center.

My Review: Last Chance Hero took me back to my good ol' high school days. Football games, traditions, and all of the in between. I loved coming back to Last Chance and catching up with characters from other stories. Cathleen Armstrong has a way of making me feel right at home in Last Chance. Like I could walk into the Dip n' Dine and chat with Juanita, or walk down the street and visit with Sarah, Elizabeth Cooley, and Kaitlyn and Olivia.

While I enjoyed the setting and the folks in the town, I didn't connect well with either of the main characters in this story. I found Dr. Jessica MacLeod to be kind of "high and mighty" in the beginning, and only slightly better towards the end. Andy Ryan seemed like a genuinely good guy, but the development for his character just wasn't there. I felt like the whole situation with his dad was just kind of thrown in at the last minute. Their romance was a little lacking as well. I just couldn't picture them together at all.

I also think Jess' sudden belief in God was a little shallow. There was no real transformation that I could see. The point of the story was about God's plan for your life. While I didn't really feel that was portrayed through either of the main characters, Kaitlyn makes a good point in her conversation with Jess that I feel I need to share: "..I have no idea why I got the results I did. It certainly wasn't because I deserved it. It was just part of the plan God has for my life. And if the results would have come back the way I was afraid they might, well, that would have been part of God's plan for my life too. Not as punishment, or judgement, but as a natural consequence of my actions. and he would have had a plan for my life that included that too. And you know what? It would have been a good plan." So many times as Christians we think bad things happen because God is punishing us. That is not at all the case. Bad things happen, not as punishment, but as a part of God's bigger plan and picture for our life.

Overall, while I enjoyed coming back to Last Chance and while the author does a good job of making me feel at home there, I didn't connect well with the main characters. It kind of took away from the story for me, but I still enjoyed it.

My Review: I love Irene Hannon. After reading Hope Harbor, I have officially added her to my favorite authors list. While this book is quite different from the thriller I read (Buried Secrets - Men of Valor series), I enjoyed this sweet, sweet romance very much. I was turning page after page to find out what the outcome of the changing tide for Hope Harbor would be.

I could relate to both Tracy and Michael's pasts. I think that's why I loved them so much. Their struggle with the tragedy and the guilt, anger, and loneliness that results from grief is something I can certainly identify with, and the author handled these feelings and emotions without bogging the story down with them. The progression of each character in the story felt natural and flowed flawlessly throughout the book. I loved reading about Anna and her hurts and hopes, too. Her side story was just as interesting and exciting as the main story.

The message of the book, as the overview states, is about change. Sometimes, letting go of the past regrets, failures, hurts, and anger is the hardest thing we will ever do. In the end, though, it's so worth it. Each of these characters had to battle their pasts in order to embrace the future God wanted for them. I loved how the author mingled a healthy dose of faith, love, and grace in her story, as well as the hard feelings of bitterness, anger, and regret.

Overall, Hope Harbor certainly lived up to it's name. It has renewed my hope in the future God laid out for me. God certainly knew what he was doing when I was given a copy of this book. I look forward to more exciting, faith-filled works from this amazing author.

My Review: This is one of the best suspense books I've read in a long time. Patricia Bradley writes a gripping story, that had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails until the very end. I was kept guessing right along with the characters, and I really loved that about the story. It was fast paced and exciting from beginning to end.

I loved the characters. The depth and emotional development of each character was expertly woven throughout the story. I was deeply involved in Livy and Alex's relationship with each other and their fathers. I could relate to having a rocky relationship with your parent. Robyn's story tugged at my heart strings and I longed to just give her a hug. The romance between Livy and Alex was underplayed, but I liked that. The focus of the story was on the investigation, as it should have been.

The message of the story, to me, was about fear. Livy, Alex, and Robyn let fear rule their lives, each to a different degree. Overcoming our fears can be very difficult, but rewarding in the end. Each character overcomes their fears, and even though I began to doubt it for a minute, the ending was rewarding.

Overall, I'm glad I got to visit Logan Point again and look forward to more by this awesome author.

My Review: The third and final installment of the Port Aster Secrets series is just as gripping and exciting as the first two. I really loved how Sandra Orchard concluded all of the twists and turns from the first two books in a nice and tidy story. I was guessing at who the bad guys were and who the good guys were until the very end. 

I really enjoyed watching Kate and Tom fall in love throughout the series. Their romance was rocky, but sweet all the same. His protectiveness over her warmed my soul. Her reticence towards him was understandable, but you couldn't deny her feelings, even if she did. With a whole host of bad guys and good guys, this story is not lacking for character excitement.

Both Kate and Tom had to learn to trust that God doesn't always answer our prayers with a "yes" and that's ok. Sometimes, He has other plans for us, better plans, and they are even more than what we were asking for. Overall, I'm very pleased with the conclusion of this book. It had me turning as quickly as I could until the very end.

My Review: Amanda Cabot writes a compelling story of "what-ifs" in her latest novel, In Firefly Valley. From the first page, I was enraptured. I took my time reading it because I didn't want it to end. The story was well through out and the pace was nice and even. Returning to Dupree, Texas and Rainbow's End was enjoyable and I loved catching up with Greg and Kate and getting a glimpse at how their lives were progressing from the end of the first book, At Bluebonnet Lake.

Marisa St. George and Blake Kendall are extremely complex characters. Each has their own set of struggles to hash out throughout the story. Marisa's struggles were very personal to me. Growing up in a similar situation, I can sympathize with her feelings of anger and need for control. Her journey touched me the most. Blake's was a little less dramatic. I loved his character none-the-less. Their romance, though almost love at first sight, had it's ups and downs that made it more life-like than fairy tale, which I appreciated.

The message of the story is about second chances. Each character faces a point in their lives where they need to allow God to work in their lives and let them overcome their past issues. This involves forgiveness and letting go of anger and bitterness. The author is conveying how much bitterness and anger can control your life without you even realizing it. It's a powerful message.

Overall, I really related to this story and I loved it. From reading the exerpt of the next book in the Texas Crossroads series, On Lone Star Trail, it's going to be another exciting book!

My Review: I'm a big fan of Lorna Seilstad's Lake Manawa Summer series, so I jumped at the chance to review this book for Revell Reads. I was not disappointed. Though this is the third book in the series (about the third Gregory sister Tessa), it reads like a stand alone book. I would, however, like to read the first two books in the series so I can get the background on Hannah and Charlotte!

This story was so much fun. Tessa's personality shown through the entire book and I lapped it up. She is bubbly, effervescent, and exciting. Life is her "greatest adventure" and it shows through each page. Her "reach for the stars" personality is the perfect match for solid, serious, and feet firmly planted on the ground Reese. His protective and humble personality was refreshing. I really liked that he didn't try to change Tessa, he just arranged his life around her's.

Tessa and Reese both have to learn to put their faith in a power greater than their own. "A small amount of genuine faith is enough to produce great hope." Even faith the size of a mustard seed is enough for Jesus to do the work. Reese has to learn to let go of trying to please his earthly father and work to please his heavenly Father. Tessa has to learn that man will let you down at some point, no matter how good the person is. The only one who won't let you down is the Lord.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book and look forward to reading more from this amazing author.

My Review: Any book that starts with "that whole thing about being a big fish in a small pond is more than just a saying, at least in my neck of the woods," is going to be a great book in my opinion! And this is definitely a great book! I loved it from start to finish. The description of the setting made me want to come to dinner at Sam's with Queenie and the whole Fisher gang. The story elicited Southern Charm from beginning to end, and I loved every minute of it!

Katie Fisher is beauty, grace, and humbleness rolled into one young lady that only a small town can produce. I loved her character. She was witty, smart, funny, and had a strong faith that she tried to live every day. Brady James is a down to earth pro basketball player that has no problem showing his Faith to the world. With sparks flying from the very start, how could I not enjoy this sweet love story! Madge, Twiggy, Courtney, and Dahlia provided excellent secondary characters and their antics had me rolling!

The message of the story was incorporated very well. "Don't worry about what hasn't happened. Set your sights on what's gonna happen." Sometimes, as Christians, we get so ahead of ourselves, wanting what we don't have or waiting for something that might not even happen. Slow down! Embrace what God has for you in this moment, but don't get stuck in a rut. Keep growing and changing. Don't become stagnant. Most of all, follow the path the Lord directs you to follow.

Overall, if you're looking for a faith based, sweet southern charm story, this is the one for you.

My Review: I cannot even describe how much I loved this book. I can tell Beth White put a lot of time and research into every detail of her story. She truly "brings the Colonial South alive" and introduces a new and exciting twist to the American Revolutionary War. The plot was fast moving and well-written. The setting was fantastically detailed. Reading the story from several different points of view was interesting. While the main story was told from Lyse and Rafa, hearing from Daisy (a British descendent) and Scarlet (a slave) allowed me to become even more immersed in the time period and culture. I was eager to finish, yet sad when it ended.

I loved Lyse Lanier. Her spunk, humility, independence, and sweet spirit kept her story from being bogged down in the realities of life at the time. She truly made the story. Rafael Gozalez was as much comic relief as an added layer of intrigue to the story. His humanity and kind nature were a balance to Lyse's more impetuous side. The romance that blossomed between them and the sparks that flew whenever they were around each other was refreshing.

The message of the story, while bringing to light aspects of the American Revolution that helped shaped our country as we now know it, was about praying and trusting and believing. Each character had to come to grips with the path their lives had taken, whether it was because of choices made or because of being forced against their will, and to trust that the loving God they knew had a plan. As Scarlet reminds us, "God had a way of brining encouragement into the darkest of days."

Overall, if you're looking for espionage and intrigue in the midst of history, this is the book for you. I look forward to reading more from this amazing author!

My Review: As the overview states, this is definitely a "can't-put-it-down thriller that will have readers up until the wee hours devouring every page." I loved every minute of this book. From the mystery of "who did it" to the romance to the action-packed conclusion, I didn't want it to end. The descriptions and the plot were not over the top or hard to believe as some writers tend to make these types of stories. I really enjoyed the believableness of the story.

The characters were well-developed and well-written. I loved both Mac and Lisa. They were both strong characters, with a lot of heart, dedication, and faith. Reading the story from Jessica's point of view provided an added layer of thrill. To think that one person could be so calculating and cold is just phenomenal. 

Both characters have relocated because they felt led by the Lord to do so. Trusting in God on that level is sometimes a hard thing to do. These characters do it with humility and grace. I think that's the message the author is subtly trying to get across.

Overall, this edge-of-your-seat thriller had me turning page after page until the very end. I look foreward to reading the next book in Irene's Men of Valor series.

My Review: "Their survival was a testament to her people's story: roots that adapted to whatever soil they were transplanted into, thorns that bespoke of the pain they bore, blossoms each spring that declared God's power to bring new life from death... The roses were a living witness to survival."

Not having ever read a books by Suzanne Woods Fisher before, I really enjoyed this story. The ebb and flow of the plot kept me engaged. The description of life for the German "Peculiars" on the boat fascinated me. I cannot imagine being jammed into the lower hold of a ship for 83 days. The stench alone would have drowned me.

Anna is such a strong, gentle woman. Her quiet, yet fiercely protective nature is what draws the reader to her. The way in which she views life holds me in awe. In fact, the way the Amish view life in general awes me. I know they are human just like us, but their humble spirits teach me a lot. Bairn, at first, seemed like a cold, scary kind of man. As the story progressed, though, we see a different side of him come out, one that I liked very much.

The message of the story was the best part. As you can see from the quotes I've pulled, Suzanne is trying to get across the point of God's sustaining grace. No matter what the situation is, God can bring you through it if you just ask.

"Even in the midst of great gales, they could know peace."

"Broken expectations aren't meant to crush our hopes, but to free us to put our confidence in God alone. They aren't meant to make us give up, but look up." 

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, and look forward to the next one in this series!

My Review: A quaint story in a quaint town, with lovable characters. I enjoyed this story. All aspects of the plot were neatly and properly tied up and completed before the end of the story. The story flowed well and was pleasant. That being said, there wasn't a lot of action where there could have been.

We really only get to know the characters on a surface level. While I can tell they develop and change their thinking throughout the story, it's not really on a level that I got emotionally attached to the characters. I really liked Patience and Jed, Emily, Hannah, Cody, and Joe. They were sweet characters. I also felt like the romance between Patience and Jed is kind of forced. It doesn't seem a deep love develops between them. 

The message of the story is perfectly summed up in the verse at the beginning of the book. "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." - Proverbs 15:1 (NIV) All through the story, the characters are working to please the Lord with their tempers and tongues. Patience is the best model for this virtue throughout the story.

Overall, this was a sweet story with likeable characters and an enjoyable plot.
