In Good Company by Jen Turano

In Good Company

A Class of Their Own, #2

After spending her childhood in an orphanage, Millie Longfellow is determined to become the best nanny the East Coast has ever seen. Unfortunately, her enthusiasm for her job tends to bring about situations that have employers looking askance at her methods. After her most recent dismissal, Millie is forced to return yet again to an employment agency.

Everett Mulberry has suddenly and quite unexpectedly found himself responsible for three children he barely knows. Attempting fatherhood while also pacifying the less-than-thrilled socialite he intends to marry is made even more complicated when the children scare off every nanny he hires. About to depart for Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer, he’s desperate for competent childcare.

At wit’s end with both Millie and Everett, the employment agency gives them one last chance—with each other. Everett is wary of Millie’s penchant for disaster, and she’s not entirely keen on another snobby, grumpy employer, but they’re both out of options. As Millie falls in love with her mischievous charges and tries to stay one step ahead of them, Everett is more focused on achieving the coveted status of society’s upper echelons. As he investigates the suspicious circumstances surrounding the children’s parents’ death, will it take the loss of those he loves to learn whose company he truly wants for the rest of his life?

My Review: This book was laugh out loud funny, action packed, and kept me “in good company” throughout its entirety. I loved catching up Abigail, Lucetta, and hearing more about Oliver and Harriet. While the plot didn’t have quite the dramatic flair I expected it to, it was still fast moving and entertaining.

I loved Millie from the moment I met her in After A Fashion. Her charming innocence, faith in herself and the Lord, and her eagerness to learn and impart knowledge is endearing and one of a kind. She is the perfect match for the presumptuous and sometimes arrogant Everett Mulberry. Millie’s interactions with him frequently make him question everything he’s known his entire life. He’s been opened up to a whole new world, essentially, because of his crazy nanny!

With the antics of Rose, Thaddeus, and Elizabeth, along with the plotting and scheming of Abigail, this book is entertaining from beginning to end. I highly recommend any of Jen Turano’s works if you’re looking for light-hearted fun and entertainment, with a touch of faith. Jen’s unique way of telling a story with witty characters, crazy antics, and faith filled messages keeps me coming back for more.

Playing the Part by Jen Turano | Review & Giveaway

Playing the Part by Jen Turano is a 352 page book in the Christian historical fiction genre.  It is published by Bethany House Publishers and was released on March 1, 2016.  To purchase your own copy, click here.

About the Book

Lucetta Plum is an actress on the rise in New York City, but is forced to abandon her starring role when a fan’s interest turns threatening. Lucinda’s widowed friend, Abigail Hart, is delighted at the opportunity to meddle in Lucetta’s life and promptly whisks her away to her grandson’s estate to hide out.

Bram Haverstein may appear to simply be a somewhat eccentric gentleman of means, but a mysterious career and a secret fascination with a certain actress mean there’s much more to him than society knows.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail’s matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can’t ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it’ll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.

My Review

As always, Jen Turano lures me in with her witty characters, humorous schemes, and hilarious plots. Playing the Part is probably my favorite book in the A Class of Their Own series, and I'm glad Jen waited until the end to tell Lucetta's story.

Jen Turano went above and beyond with this story. Lucetta Plum is an awesome character. Her strength, humor, and wit make her one of my most favorite heroines. The fact that she is unconventional, like her dear, dear friends, is even better. I loved Bram. His "knight and shining armor" ideals are endearing. His charm and wit makes him a match for Lucetta in every way. The host of secondary characters add to the depth and hilarity of the story.

The message of the story was masterfully done. Both Bram and Lucetta had to overcome secrets and parts of their pasts. They had to learn that God orchestrated all things for their good. It's a message that we can always learn from. Overall, I loved, loved, loved this story. It was absolutely hilarious and I can't wait for more fantastic stories by Jen Turano.

My Review: I absolutely LOVE Jen Turano. Her action packed, humorous books always have me laughing out loud and turning the pages eagerly. This book was no exception. From the very first page, I was hooked and didn't let go until I finished (in one day, I might add!). The plot was engaging, chock full of Jen's amazingly humorous situations and antics.

I was endeared to Harriet Peabody immediately. She radiated independence, love, faith, and vulnerability all at the same time. Her witty banter and quick mind was refreshing. Honestly, it took me a little while to warm up to Oliver Addleshaw. He was boorish and mean (for lack of a better word) at the beginning. However, as he got to know Harriet, he began to change and by the end of the book, I was rooting for him!

Jen has an interesting and intriguing way of getting her message across. Rather than blatantly stating it, she allows her characters lives and actions to reflect it. In this case, Harriet comes to the realization that all things work together for good according to HIS purpose and HIS timing. He can use any situation for His purposes and plans for our lives.

Overall, I highly enjoyed this novel. I really hope we get to delve more into the lives of Lucetta, Millie, Abigail, and Archibald in the future. If you're looking for a light-hearted, laugh out loud book with a deep and well-written message, this is the book for you!
